Subaru teases XV ahead of launch

A very inconclusive picture of the new Scooby crossover. It’ll probably look like the Shanghai concept

This is a picture of a wheel. And a headlight. And a bit of a bumper. From which, we're expected to deduce what Subaru's Qashqai rival will look like.

Thankfully, it follows the very ready-looking concept we saw at this year's Shanghai show, which you can stare at whimsically by clicking on these blue words.

The actual production XV will be fully unsheathed on September 13 during this year's Frankfurt motor show, confirmed today by parent company Fuji Heavy Industries.

So, what else do we know? The XV moniker doesn't allude to anything in particular - it's a five-seater, it'll go on sale in 2012, it's got four-wheel drive and, according to Subaru, it'll "combine the latest distinctive Subaru elements with the commanding silhouette expected of a crossover." Fancy.

It adds: "Subaru also expects the XV will bring a new type of customer to the brand, people who are confident in the knowledge of the company's AWD and engineering expertise and who are also looking for the flexibility and lifestyle statement that owning a crossover brings."

What lifestyle statement do you think owning a crossover SUV makes, TopGear.commers?

hum, difficult one... perhaps "mom with too much kids but no too much money to buy something less embarrasing"?? or maybe "mand with a very very strange identity crisis"??... really don't know, but you cannot make a SUV (or a crossover SUV or an UFO-BMW X6) to look good

Maybe it's just me but the sketch looks awfully similar to the last-generation Mercedes C-Class, minus the wheels and the higher ride height.

@ Shuttleatlantis: Subaru is shit? i suppose that's why i've got 350,000 miles on my family's 1996 Legacy Outback, a car that you can (and i have) driven 15 hours straight in without getting sore? Yes they have an understeer problem, but most people don't push them hard enough for that to be an issue. get a life :)

When I click on the 'blue words', the actual concept doesn't look that bad at all. I like the wheels(which look similar to the wheels on a Focus ST..) The corner shown here does have strong hints of Merc about it.....but it's a Subaru, so no doubt it will be as reliable as Swiss public transport.......
