Video: Toyota FT-86 drifts GT5
Those Gran Turismo boys work quickly.
Just yesterday we showed you the FT-86 concept, Toyota's shiny new rear-wheel-drive coupe developed in conjuction with Subaru, and today Polyphony has released a two-minute video of the FT-86 thrashing around the world of Gran Turismo 5.
The video confirms that the 2+2 coupe will be powered by Subaru's C-4S boxer four engine, and shows the FT-86 doing battle around Tsukuba with its spiritual predecessor, the original Toyota AE86 Corolla.
It's a great chance to see the Hachi-Roku (yep, that's Eight-Six in Japanese) from a whole bunch of new angles, and it's only serving to heighten our excitement at the arrival of the first properly interesting Toyota since, er, bloody ages ago.
You know we asked yesterday whether Toyota was finally getting its mojo back? We're thinking... yes. Very much so. The mojo return is on.

re: Da_Vincentius - i would say the engine sounds like a fairly mad in-line four - which is right for the original hachi, but this new will have a boxer, you know, as in the Impreza. Have you ever heard an impreza sound like that....? Or any subaru, for that mater....? I would say they did not get this right.

@Da_vincentius: Probably because Polyphony has a part in this car aswell, remember how closely they were involved in the creation of the GT-R and Citroën GT? I wouldn't be suprised if they also helped in this car. And as a reward they were probably able to finish modelling it long before it was released to anyone else

they unveil cars, but the game company might had the design done for a while. Also, why are they doing this type of new real car comes out, and BAM! here's the one on GT5 thing. What i think is some form of publicity.

Polyphony probably got the car early. I do wish March 2010 would hurry up and arrive (GT5 confirmed release date). 950 cars & 72 tracks, day & night, damage, weather, everything!! I want this car too. In white with yellow PIAA foglights and black bits. Reminds me of the FT-HS.

They made the engine sound like a Toyota engine (possibly like the 2ZZ-GE from the Exige)...Doesn't sound authentic. And isn't it obvious that the blokes from Polyphony have "connections"? Of course it wasn't done yesterday; they've got some spies in the large car companies.

Actually, now the video has finally loaded, I must say that it seems a little cobbled-together compared to their previous videos (F458, California, GTbyCITROEN, Gran Turismo 5 E3 video, etc.), particularly the sound - they don't usually just dub random bits of engine noise over replay music like that. I reckon Toyota asked them to make this video in advance to help promote it or something. It just doesn't seem the same as their previous works...

Iv aready pre ordered GT5 of gamestation and it says it is released on the 1st of december. I think they are telling people the wrong date to surprise them.

As usual from the guys at Polyphony Digital the graphics are near perfect, i'd call it a work of art. However the sound is much less convincing. To be honest it sounds nothing like a boxer engine at all. Seems to me they've concentrated extremely hard on the graphics and haven't really taken the sound into consideration - apart from the music which is straight from GT5 Prologue. Still im sure they'll have mastered the sound by march, just a shame it's not out any sooner. It just shows how much effort Mr. Yamauchi and his team are putting into the game. Oh and GT5 is realised in Japan in march 2010, but no confirmed date for Europe. Fingers crossed it's not too later than march for us Brits.

i've never seen so many comments for a toyota until today! an excellent and beautiful revival of the AE86! this just what the world needs, a cool reliable sports car that u can use everyday, hope toyota keep this up and we can see more affordable sports cars from them!

Ok guys - the flat four mill from the Subaru does sound like that when you use equal length headers..it sorta loses the "boxer" sound, and sounds much more like an in-line or transverse four. Check Ken Block`s latest stunt clip, with the STi 10 - that car uses equal length headers and twin-scroll turbo - doesn`t sound like a boxer at all. This Toyoda is nice..just a pity that Subaru are starting to dilute their brand..

what is it wiht people an whineing about the 146bhp. it only costs 20000..if u want twice the power then spend twice as much ..but your missing the point...toyota havent made something as brillient and equivilant to the original celicas and the AE86 in 30 years ....30 years since the last highly modifiable, super cheap, light, small, rear wheel drive toyota. those cars were brillient in a way the supra could never be because the supra was so heavy and fat no matter how much power it had it was never going to be as awesome as the TA23 or the AE86

I am just happy that Toyota decided to stop being boring and partnering with Subaru is both beneficent to both companies. Can't wait for what Subaru have in-store for us. Maybe a 4wd 2seat turbo coupe?

It took me a whole 30 seconds to remember that this was all inside a video game. They should just keep "Hashi Roku" as its model name. It has a lot more meaning than "Corolla" or "Avensis". What in the world do you avense anyway?

i dont like japanese cars because they have japanese styling im sorry its just my taste but i think they all look ugly apart from some which have been designed in europe like the new accord and the avensis. the new bmw z4 is a far better looker, and with them tuning firms its probably possible to make it as fast or (whatever adjective is the one that they are after) as the toyota. but the thing is the interior of the z4 its perfect this being a toyota is probably going to have another hideously plasticky and drab interior
