Toyota FT-86 concept

This is the final production version of Toyota's long-awaited FT-86. Probably.

These pictures, scanned from a ‘Modellista' parts division brochure and leaked onto an Internet, show the rear-drive sportscar in all its glory. Toyota hasn't confirmed the authenticity of the pictures.

Just last week the company announced it would finally, finally, reveal the production version of the FT-86 at next month's Tokyo motor show, alongside the co-developed Subaru BRZ sports coupe. And if these images are genuine, barring the Modellista bits, you can clearly see Toyota has stayed very close to the concept.

For the first time, we can see the interior of the FT-86 too, featuring those sports seats, instrument display, stubby gearlever and climate controls. There's even a cupholder.

While no acceleration details have yet been revealed, we know that both cars will come with a Subaru-derived flat-four engine - together with a six-speed manual gearbox (an six-speed auto is optional) - with different power outputs: the FT-86 will hover around 200bhp, while Subaru's BRZ will host just under 300bhp.

They'll share the same oily bits underneath, with a limited-slip diff (good), independent suspension (good) tuned for our roads, and ESP. Toyota also says the FT-86 will be around 200kg lighter than a Volkswagen Scirocco, putting it at an estimated kerbweight of 1,100kg, with rumours of pricing hovering around £20,000.

Can this lightweight, rear-wheel-drive Japanese sports coupe tempt you into parting with your thrupenny bits? Regale us with your colourful commentary, below.

UPDATE:

A new pic of the Toyota FT-86 (or Scion, as Toyota is known in the States) has leaked onto the Internet, the second such image in a week, showing the anticipated new rear-drive sports coupe sans extras, in production form.

It's been tagged from a promotional booklet (hence the fold down the centre), just weeks away from its officially official public debut at the Tokyo motor show. We'll keep you posted if anything else crops up.

Nice one! Looks much better than the Erlkönig-pics would have suggested.

In the US, this is going to be released under Scion with the name "FR-S." While I can't say that the name is any better, this promises to be a great improvement to the lineup over here. Can't wait to get my hands on one!
