Polo GTi lookalike?
Red, it seems, is the colour at this year’s Worthersee meet. Yesterday, we saw an lipsticked Q5 presented at the big Austrian GTI meet, and today VW has followed it up with a brace of crimson tuning jobs.
There’s a Halford-spec Golf GTI with red-rimmed alloys, tarty seats and absolutely no more power. More excitingly, VW is also showing off a Polo concept that, it says, ‘offers an initial impression of how a sport version of the new compact might look’. A Polo GTI concept, in other words.
It doesn’t half look like the Golf, does it? Those 18-inch wheels might be a bit much, but we’ll take the sports exhaust and lowered chassis, ta very much.
Unfortunately it’s not exactly… powerful. The Polo concept gets an 1.4-litre engine putting out a pitiful 85bhp, good for a 0-60mph time of around 12 seconds.
Come on, VW – this is a concept! What’s wrong with sticking a mental little turbo engine in there, just to whet our appetite? A mental little turbo engine putting out, say, 210bhp – because you’ll have to top that pesky 180bhp Ibiza Cupra – and promising Viggen-esque levels of torque steer. Even if you never build it, at least it’s something to get excited about.
Or what about a mid-engined Polo W12? Actually, that’s just daft. It’d never fit. In which case we’ll settle for a mid-engined Polo with the 6.0-litre V12 diesel from the Audi Q7. Fast and economical – what more could you want?

FAIL 85 bhp! thats stupid low. You need more than 100 bhp to get around, 85 is less than a bloody scooter

The problem with the Polo is that it weights a lot more than an Ibiza or any other supermini. That's because of course it's built way way better, but then - sadly - 85bhp is not much for a Polo. If a GTI version is likely to exist though, it won't have 85bhp, why not the 1.4 litre 140bhp from the Scirocco?

I don't think this car need 200bhp, i don't want to sound like James May but in todays world of 30mph speed limits you can't go really fast with out some traffic womble pulling you over and giving you a one million pound speeding ticket. I do think however it is really, i mean, My Fiat Mutpla has 130bhp and is bigger and heavier!

while on the subject of vw and mental engines, we were talking about this the other month at work and decided that we need w16 transporter vans instead of pissy peogout experts. a touch pricey on fuel was the only objection from the manager though

only 85bhp and 0-60 in 12 seconds. Come on VW!!!! I have seen golf carts faster than this. This is another example of excessive and undeserved sports car looks for the level of performance. Stop making half-arsed attempts and do it properly.

It's just a concept but the 1.4 TSI would probably fit in there. And, what is it with the stripes? VW come on now... you're all about subtleness... stripes should only be used on a lightweight version of something or a hot Ford!

omg!!!!! are you lot all thick as f*ck or somthing....for starters the previous model had 1.8turbo engine so its not goin 2 be slower to start off with,, and its gettin a 180bhp 1.4 tfsi engine out off the scirroco,,, know your facts b4 u start postin crap comments on here!!!!!!!

85 bhp??? wtf? if you would get a leash around a turtles neck and get it to pull the fat polo around you would get more hp
