Hot 'Roc
It’s here, the one we’ve been waiting for. The new super-hot Scirocco. The R.
You teased us, VW, with that 'Studie R' concept back in December. Then you went all quiet. We thought you’d forgotten all about the idea of a double-hot Scirocco.
But then you go and totally redeem yourself by announcing that the production-ready Scirocco R, the fastest 'Roc yet, will be unveiled at the Nurburgring 24 Hour race this weekend. Announcing that it’ll be powered by a 2.0-litre engine with a meaty 1.2 bar of boost, a new alloy head, high pressure injectors and new intercooler.
A 2.0-litre engine that’ll put out – ready for this? – 261bhp.
261bhp. Though VW hasn't released any performance figures yet, bear in mind that the most powerful Scirocco at present puts out 197bhp and will hit 60mph in just over seven seconds. So we reckon you're looking at a Scirocco that'll nail the sprint in comfortably under six seconds. That's seriously fast.
And yes, it's staying front wheel drive. OK, it might have been a fraction faster off the line with Golf R32-style four-wheel drive. But it would have been heavier. And more expensive. And the Focus RS has proved that powerful front drivers don’t have to torque steer themselves into a parallel dimension. VW's 'XDS' cross-axle traction control system – as seen on the new Golf GTI – should help out with that.
So how do you spot a Scirocco R? Bigger brakes with gloss black calipers, for a start. A new, more aggressive front bumper and a big new rear spoiler. Smoked rear lights. And, if you’re looking really closely, new big bucket seats and a blue-trimmed display unit. Subtle stuff, but all good.
We don’t know how much it’ll cost yet. VW says it’ll announce prices shortly before the Scirocco R goes on sale at the end of this year.

Wrote an article about this on my site yesterday. Prices are looking at around £25k. So if you're a chav, get a Focus RS. If you're not, get this. I'm really glad I didn't get a scirocco yet. Been hankering after one for ages now. Glad I held out now that this one's come along!

Actually if you spec up a 2.0 TDi GT trim Scirocco it works out cheaper than an equivalent Golf. (If you spec it how I want it at least!) All I'm saying about the Scirocco R is YUM! (Closely followed by Yes please!)

Thing is, VW have shot themselves in the foot. They made the Mk6 Golf and Golf GTi relatively prematurely because the Scirocco was accidentally better than the Mk5 GTi. Now they've made an even hotter Scirocco, undoing all of the Golf department's hard work. Does this mean we'll see a new Golf R32 sometime soon then?

i like this one. generally europe and hatchbacks dont work but now a days thats a different story. The Renault Clio, VW Gti, VW R32, and more (i bet) on the way. this looks like it could be a popular car but its hard to get around the price. maybe a bit high but ultimately worth it

Go for the Focus RS if you like track suit bottoms if you like your cars to be more subtle like BIMMERS go for the scirooco R very good looking and quite subtle looking but still HAMMERING them mean looks

S65-AMG: sort of. The 'R' model is a new line of hot cars that VW are making, starting with the Scirocco. Key features will include 2L engines rather than the 3.2L V6 in the R32. They're also ditching the 4WD systems. So the new Golf will be 2L (hence 'R20 rather than R32 - spot the pattern?), roughly the same horsepower as the Scirocco R, and FWD. That's all we know so far.

I'm loving the GT24 bodykit (and an actually USEABLE 261bhp) but those wheels are just like the ones on the Audi RS6. Plus I'm not really sure where the Scirocco fits in. So this one is faster than a GTi, but likely roughly the same as the inevitable Golf R20. So it's a Golf for people who don't want a Golf? Or a Golf-alike for looking cooler in? I wish they'd made it a coupe instead of just a melted hatchback to make this all easier to work out. Looks great, though.

Why not 300 HP and AWD to compete with Focus RS? Or dust it even? It lookes like VW gave up. Don't forget Ford is going to make their own Scirocco looking coupe based on RS with 300 HP.

I think I'm just gonna buy used R32. That's the best car VW has ever made. I adore its sound.

hmm might as well buy a WRX used. Or an STI used :) u still get a turbo, a 2 or 2.5 engine and a 4wd system, a boot and 250 or 275 hp. Seems like a no brainer to me! But still a lovely car, its just such a shame that German manufacturers tend to make cars that can be a bit pointless at times.....

chav,s in a focus RS!! are you seriously saying you have less chance of seeing burberry cap in this than a focus 2nd hand no car is safe and anyway i would rather be a "chav" as i would have spent 25k on 300bhp

Beautiful...without question!!! I test drove the GT 2.0 TSI just over a week ago & was absolutely blown away. This one would probably cause temporary loss of speech & uncontrollable dribbling!! I aint mad at the R8-looking front bumper either... its all good & I want one even more!!

I've always liked the new Scirocco and it just looks better and better from different angles. But it does seem to be quite expensive compared to Golf and I don't think many people are willing to pay that sort of money than just getting themselves a GTi. But still it's a seriously cool car, just that if I were spending 20k , I'd have definitely put my money on a 2.4 JDTM 159...
