R and R
Scirocco R or Golf R? If you’re after a hot VW, it’s a tricky decision.
Last week at the Frankfurt show, VW unveiled the Golf R20 – the replacement for the R32 and the quickest Golf ever, kicking out 266bhp through all four wheels.
The Scirocco R, on the other hand, packs just 5bhp fewer but remains resolutely front-wheel drive. Which means the Golf will be a fraction quicker but maybe, just maybe, a bit less wieldly.
The Scirocco, we reckon, is the sharper-looking thing, but the Golf has definite sleeper appeal. Ooh, it’s a tough one.
To help you decide, VW has given us an early look at its new advert, which sees the Golf R and Scirocco R go head-to-head around a track… with the perplexing help of a G-force simulator.
OK, it isn’t quite as spectacular as last week’s Ferrari 458 head-to-head video, but it’s still a fine chance to see the two hot VWs out on the open air.
Take a look, and then we need your definitive verdict: Scirocco R or Golf R?
If you need help deciding, then check out the Scirocco R app on iTunes, in which you get to drive the car around a 'Ring like track. It's not terribly realistic though...

So much for having no promotion of speed in VW ads, eh? Tough to choose without checking the interiors to see if they're as similar. Atm, I'd say the Scirocco by a nose.

Scirocco, any day. With a Golf, there's no getting away from the fact that you're in a Golf, no matter how many letters there are after it's name. GTi, R, it's all the same. At least with a Scirocco, you can pretend that it isn't a Golf (although, really, it is) and just get on with enjoying it.

@DiZzY - With you all the way mate. As for VWs, there is something very wrong with the Golf's back side - and being an obnoxious male I consider myself an expert on back sides. The Scirocco looks pretty, meaning you will be tired of looking at it after two weeks. It's a case of Heads you lose, tales you lose...go for the Ford. I am not even being biased, I owned two GTI's and still have one of them. But, like a good women, with a bad upbringing (VW), the years have been unkind to the Golf's - they keep getting fatter and vulgar...

How the heck do you choose from this? The ad is total rubbish. It really shows nothing useful about the cars at all and is entirely about image. I wouldn't select a KETTLE based on this sort of advertising.

Between these to its the Scirocco for me, just because its by far the better looking car. But kinda have to agree with DiZzY and NorthWolfeCND and would go for a Focus RS over both of them for the sound alone

The Golf. It has four wheel drive ,so it must handle better then the schirocco and it dows 0-62 in 5.5 seconds which is better then the focus rs .maybe the schirocco looks better ,but i´d buy the golf.

I´m not sure with the Focus issue.If the Golf wont be much heavier ,and more expencieve then the Focus,i´d go for the Golf.The reason is that in everiday traffic you cant use the Focus´ handling and top speed ,but you can use the Golf´s acceletation.

I'm sure both are just as tractable in winter conditions, although the AWD Golf would help more on snow days like we had in February. The 'roc is obviously better looking, and I imagine it's more fun to hoon round a track in, simply because it moves around more and previous Golf R32s had a habit of not getting sideways at all. Good everyday, but not fun in TopGear land. So it's looking good for the Scirocco, but tbh, I'd probably end up going for the best value for money.

I don't understand why they didn't put the better performance gear (higher output engine, AWD) into the sharper looking car? What's the point of a Scirocco? It's a great looking car that isn't quite as good as a golf... I don't get it.

I remember driving a Golf VR6 4WD, so I'd go for the Golf. That thing handled like pure quicksilver. Any 2WD will have a tough time beating that experience of effortless speed. But what if the Scirocco was 4WD as well? I don't know.

You see the problem with VW is that in my opinion they haven't produced a true GTI since the MKII 16V and I still don't think that donkey facelifted MKV is any better, the R on the other hand is what the GTI should have been, what i'm trying to say is they've lost the meaning of what a Golf GTI is meant to be... its the naughty little kid that was easy to please it was simple, fast and for its size and technology handled like a demon, today peter pan has grown up and forgotten to fly there's no imagination added to the mix any more, the Roc on the other hand that's another story the Roc is good looking sporty and has still managed to capture that naughty kid-ness that i look for in a performance VW hatch it deserves the AWD more then the golf, for me put the Roc dress on the Golf underwear and i'll be happy, but untill then i'm for the Ford RS
