Volkswagen MKVI Golf BlueMotion

VW has unveiled its cleanest MkVI Golf yet, the BlueMotion, and - yep, you guessed right - it's even more frugal and less polluting than the last one. Which was very frugal and unpolluting.

The new Golf BlueMotion emits just 107g/km of CO2 - the last generation coughed out a dirty 119g/km - and will manage 68.9mpg on the combined cycle. That's up 6mpg on the MkV BlueMotion and means the Golf will manage over 800 miles on a single tank.

That's thanks, in part at least, to the introduction of stop-start technology on the BlueMotion, a system we didn't see on the previous generation. The MkVI is more powerful than its predecessor, too, with a 1.6-litre turbodiesel putting out 104bhp.

Prices start at £17,165 for the Golf BlueMotion, but if you're really determined to get your tax disc for free, hold fire: VW is promising a sub-100g/km Golf by the end of the year...
