Eclectic Japanese manufacturer known for tiny, fizzy little boxes, some of which have gained traction in certain markets. Few have really wowed the UK, but under the trusty watch of Toyota, which has owned 51 per cent of the show since 1999, quality and good ideas are on the rise. Don't dismiss.

    What a breath of fresh air! A tiny little MG Midget for the modern era, which despite its unlovely badge is a hoot to drive and puts a smile on your face. A future classic.

    Wildly original styling will polarise opinion, but inside it's a well sorted little car with space for four. Keep your mobile in your pocket though - the boot's too small.

    A city car shared with Subaru's Justy. Less fashionable than wet perms and slower than dial-up internet, it's actually pretty good. Won't make the Panda extinct though.

    Pretty much your worst SUV nightmare. Push it off a cliff, don't push it off a cliff - either way it will depreciate at about the same rate. A good argument for walking.
