An antidote for anyone who despairs at the loss of innocence. How sweet it is to think that there's a shed in the Malvern hills in which a dedicated bunch of artisans is hard at work hand-building sports cars with wooden chassis. What's more, with the Aero 8 and forthcoming hybrid LifeCar, it looks like they're here to stay.

3 Wheeler
Possibly the most fun we’ve had all year. It’s not modern, but it is deeply, deeply cool.

Plus 4
£29,728 - £32,735
The car that it's always been about, really. Up there in the top ten of reassuring old English clichés, it's a gloriously impractical, modestly performing jalopy. Lovely.

Roadster
£36,628 - £39,635
The one with the 3.0-litre V6 Jag engine. In full flight it feels rather like being in the front car of an Alton Towers ride – an escapist headrush to trounce any video game.
