Hammond’s icons: Aston Martin Vanquish S
It may be heavy, it may be expensive, but the Aston Vanquish is still a thing of beauty

It was slated on Top Gear for its flappy-paddle gearbox, which is still clunky, stubborn and difficult to use. The car's too heavy, weighing in at 1,835kg, or a thousand tonnes in Top Gear maths. And, on early models, the brakes quickly fade into the distance like a receding train. It costs a fortune, still. Even today, 12 years after it first appeared, the Vanquish goes for anything from 40 to 160 grand. An incredible amount for a car that, even in its own lifetime, was outpaced and out-engineered by its own stablemate, the Aston Martin DB9.
