Hammond’s icons: Aston Martin Vanquish S
It may be heavy, it may be expensive, but the Aston Vanquish is still a thing of beauty

It'll hit 60mph from a standstill in 4.0 seconds, and top speed is 201mph. Plenty fast enough for Bond, who used one in Die Another Day. And pedalling it around our track as best I could, I looked for reasons why Bond would choose one. It's certainly not a razor-sharp implement. Later cars had their suspension uprated and improved, and, whilst better, it was still no match dynamically for the newer DB9. It's smooth, though, the ride being best described perhaps as elegantly sporting. And don't forget, this is, in many ways and to many people, the last ‘proper' Aston. That is to say, it was made by men with hammers. The monocoque might boast extruded aluminium and composite materials, but the aluminium body was made by hitting metal until it was the right shape. And that, for me, even if not for Bond, is the clincher.
