1976 Golf GTI Mk1
Introduced in 1976, the Mk1 GTI is often considered the spiritual father of hot hatchery. OK, so it wasn't the first, but it was the first properly French polished fast hatchback. Lightweight constructionmeant it could outrun Ferrari 308s on country lanes, and a 0-60mph time of 9seconds meant it wasn't far behind at the lights. And you could even get a chest of drawers in the boot before you headed down the Sloaney Pony for a Sol or two.
Why wouldn't you want one?
