Top Gear On Ice: Audi A1 quattro
A tiny 249 bhp A1 quattro. Excited? You should be.

Ah yes, the engine. No, it's not the five-cylinder that you might have been hoping for. Instead, it's a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder TFSI with 249bhp and 258lb ft of torque. It's got the usual Audi tech: a couple of balancer shafts, a variable intake camshaft, heavy-duty direct injection and an intercooler for the little turbo, but there's no real tech advancements. Which makes it sound fairly ordinary, until you remember that this engine is in an A1 - a car whose previous top-end power output is in the 180bhp region - and whose dimensions resemble a motorsport-themed thimble. The bare numbers don't really do it justice. Yes, 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds and 152mph top end is rapid, but nothing you can't eke out of a modern TT.
