Triple test: Veloster vs Astra GTC vs Scirocco

The claws are out, as we unleash three design-led, economical coupes in a catwalk dogfight…

But you can't blame Hyundai for that: VW has been doing Sciroccos (or Corrados) for nearly 40 years, and so the Scirocco has a real sense of confidence while the Hyundai is still finding its identity, and it's quite open about its experimentation. Better, surely, that Hyundai goes its own way than that it copies VW.

But neither of these is the best car here. The Volkswagen is too slow and the Hyundai is too stiff-riding and noisy. We're painfully aware that objective road-test assessment isn't always the way people choose this sort of car, but, by that method, the winner is clear. The Vauxhall is good-looking, and the best to ride in and to drive. Bring on that VXR.
