Triple test: Veloster vs Astra GTC vs Scirocco
The claws are out, as we unleash three design-led, economical coupes in a catwalk dogfight…

So, coupes are desirable because they look different from the hatch: they say you actively chose your car, rather than just took one from the pool. You sit in them, and they fold around you, their pillars and roofs closer, which makes them feel like they're generally more up for it. And coupes bring to mind sportier, faster cars - an attitude borne out by the facts: there are some real engineering changes to separate these from their donor hatches. The VW has a wider track than a Golf and more aluminium in its suspension. The Astra has the excellent HiPer strut front suspension, and also wider tracks. The Veloster is lower than the new i30, with tauter suspension and more sophisticated dampers.
