Triple test: Veloster vs Astra GTC vs Scirocco
The claws are out, as we unleash three design-led, economical coupes in a catwalk dogfight…

These chassis were designed for more power. There's a 265bhp Scirocco R, an Astra GTC with 280bhp is on the way, and a Veloster Turbo is coming, too. But here we have a base 122bhp Scirocco, an Astra GTC SRi 138bhp and a Veloster Sport with the only engine available, also a 138bhp. They're a tight group on price, falling between £20,065 and £20,495. Intuition might say the price order is Hyundai, Vauxhall, VW, but actually it's reversed, with the VW being cheapest. Mind you, the Veloster has the most power and by far the most equipment. The £18k base Veloster matches the others for kit. Anyway, all three of these cars feel underpowered. Get used to it. While we admit we lean to the view that you can never have too much performance, fact is, if you're going to choose one of these three, you have to take a broader view and love cars for reasons other than outright power. After all, none of these three are anything like the best drivers' cars available for the money. You could have a delicious hot hatch with options: a Cooper S, a Clio RenaultSport, a 180bhp Polo GTI.
