Triple test: Veloster vs Astra GTC vs Scirocco
The claws are out, as we unleash three design-led, economical coupes in a catwalk dogfight…

From where we sit, engine power is pretty important for a coupe. And here the Scirocco starts to come undone. It manages with a weedy 122bhp, 1.4-litre turbo. Pay an extra £1,800, and you get the one with the added supercharger and 160bhp, and, frankly, if you don't, you'll curse yourself. This engine is smooth and quiet enough, and it works well enough in a supermini like an Audi A1, but, in a bigger sports coupe, it buckles under the strain. It just doesn't like to pull beyond 5,000rpm, so when you run out of steam, changing down often doesn't help much.
