What it’s like to drive a… large logger

I lower the arm and fix the clamp around the neck of an 80-foot tree. It could have been a thousand, for all the fear in my pants. The technique demands a slight lift to tug at the roots, then a push of a small button that sends the integral chainsaw slicing through the trunk. The tree then falls to the side (with skill, away from the cab) and is laid on the floor.
Another easy sequence of Playstation-like switches then forces the felled tree through the clamp, tearing off all the branches. This takes seconds. The machine then rolls the bare trunk back through and slices an inch or two off the base to zero its measuring device.
