In Britain aftermarket tuning means a visit to Halfords for some neon, but in Germany it’s different. Hand your Porsche Panamera, BMW X6 or Mercedes SLS over to one of the numerous tuning houses and just about anything is possible. Body reskins in carbon, 800bhp power upgrades, ostrich leather cabins…

The number and variety of cars isn’t as extensive at the Frankfurt motorshow as it is at Geneva, but it’s still worth a flick-through to see what travesties they’ve performed in the name of individuality.

But let’s not simply poke fun. This is an industry that’s worth billions of euros a year to the German economy and many of these cars are engineered to the same exacting degree as the models they’re based on. Plus, what’s not to like about a twin-turbo V12 Merc G-Wagen? Apart from the fuel economy.
