Hammond's icons: Golf GTI MkI
Proving not all old hatches are rubbish, here's the time RH took VW's icon for a blast round the TG track

Every corner is a confident, grippy turn; every straight, a raspy, grunty little blast.
The archetypal image of a Mk1 GTI is of it cocking a wheel as it corners. This GTI is rather special as it's the only one VW have in the UK and is therefore precious.
I'm anxious about whipping its little arse about our track and returning it all broken. So I push as hard as I dare into a corner, squeeze a little bit of brake pedal, turn in slightly more, and lo and behold, it pitches forward and turns tripod. I wanted the car to do its wheel-cocking thing, so it did. Simple as that. You see - it doesn't know how to disappoint.
