But one thing makes up for all the awful threats to life and limb. The views. There's a lot to be said for reaching the top of the pass and looking out at what feels like the guts and glory of Africa stretched out in front of you, the stepped haze shading the surrounding Atlas. It fills your senses, brims your eyes with endless vista. Your breath will literally catch in your throat. It'll catch twice when you look down, see the sliver of tarmac that you've just driven up like a loon and realise the enormity of the drops. If you came off here, there would be way too much time to think.
And then no thoughts at all.
