I wake to find a cockroach the size of a 50p-piece fighting a merry little battle through my chest hair and a tortoise acting as a doorstop. Feeling slightly Gerald Durrell, we find that the next day is more of the same, running up and across another pass, an unnamed track that leads to the bottom of the N8 south of Tiourar and Ameskhoud, breathing in the view and clenching our way down the other side. We eventually head down, to sample what are locally known as the ‘death roads', alongside the N8 up towards Argana, not for their precipitous drops, but simply because the standard of driving means that lots of people die. Soon, you can see why.
