I actually think this sort of thing is more important in basic cars, because making a 400bhp car amusing is not really that difficult. Four hundred horsepower is always going to be entertaining to some extent. And if you pay £50,000 for your motor it's probably going to have a nice interior made of quality materials, and good levels of equipment and so on and so on. Building pleasure into a slow, practical and penny-pinching car is much harder, not least because car makers are starting to forget that a basic car is supposed to be fun first and foremost. If you own the mid-range version of a slightly undersized hatchback then in most of the respects by which we find cars desirable your lot in motoring life is going to be on the miserable side. The least it can do is be stimulating to drive.
