James thrashes new Fiesta and Polo

The Polo is, in some ways because of its dynamic shortcomings, admittedly. But the engine rumbles and chuffs, the body tilts, the gears clunk home with pleasing finality, and life is good. The weird thing is that I've never really felt like this about a VW before. To be honest, I find them a bit plodding. The Golf is actually the only car the world needs, but I've never wanted one. I do want this Polo a bit, because it makes such a good job of a fundamentally bad brief.
This is actually a contest between a car that is very good and a car that is very likeable. Likeable is a much rarer attribute in all things, even toasters, and an especially welcome one in a car. I'd have the Polo.
But I'd recommend the Fiesta, just in case you're reading this back to front.
