James thrashes new Fiesta and Polo

But here's the interesting thing; the VW is actually more, well, interesting. While the three-cylinder engine is really quite smooth and unobtrusive in the cruise, once stretched it becomes quite vocal, and makes a noise like someone drumming on cardboard boxes. While the Fiesta tends to hang on to its revs for too long during gearchanges, the Polo responds to the pedal very smartly, and delivers an amusing little gasp as you lift off for the next shift. It reminds me in some ways of the original Mini. That was more of a rasp on the overrun, this is closer to a cough, but it's still something to look forward to, which is just as well because it will be happening all the time. When your immediate environment takes the form of a tiresome runabout, this sort of thing is welcome.
