It was utter chaos - Rene Arnoux led for the first 15 laps, then retired ushering Alain Prost to take the lead until four laps from the finish, when the Frenchman span and lost his front end. Ricardo Patrese then took the lead before spinning with just over a lap to go. Didier Pironi had a go up front before running out of fuel on the last. This gave Patrese just enough time to bump-start his car, jump in and win his first Grand Prix.
