Just to give you an idea of how popular these races became, take a look at the sales figures for the fast Fords and Chevys. Ford sold 22,000 Mustangs in the first two days after it was launched, and more than one million in the first two years. Chevy sold 250,000 Camaros a year from launch. And Dodge was belting out as many Chargers as it could build from 1966 to 1970. To put that into perspective, more of these pony cars were sold each year in the US than all of the cars of all makes and sizes sold in the UK in 2008.
