To make some sense of the David and Goliath style entry sheet, there were two classes: the under 2.0-litre U2 class for the almost exclusively European brands, and the up to 5.0-litre O2 class for the local heroes. With that sorted, the first-ever Trans-Am race was run at Sebring in 1966 and won by Formula One hero Jochen Rindt in an Alfa Romeo GTA. Second was local hero Bob Tullius driving a Dodge Dart. He later went on successfully to campaign Jaguars for years.
