Vauxhall Ampera: exclusive first drive
We drive GM’s electric-petrol hybrid, make a little bit of history…

The Ampera arrives in 2012, having gone on sale first in the US as the Chevy Volt. It's going to be expensive to buy (I'd guess £35,000) because of its big expensive battery. But if you can keep your daily commute under 40 miles, then you will cover all its daily energy needs by electricity alone. You'll need petrol only for the occasional long trip.
And given that petrol is taxed at about 400 per cent and electricity is taxed at five per cent, that will make the Ampera a cheap car to run.
