Bear with me. If I ordered a three-door manual Golf R, bog standard in white, it'd be £30,090, less five grand makes it a £25,090 loan. Assume eight per cent APR and I'll pay it off over five years, because the car would only just be getting nicely bedded in after that time, the gearchange freeing up into quick buttery slickness, the engine at its most powerful best, the dash and control surfaces and seats all starting to get that lovely comfortable worn-in sheen, familiar and cosy and good. That leaves me with £508 a month to pay. Or ah, £524 actually, because I'd specify the £765 Adaptive Chassis Control (ADC) option. It gives you adjustable dampers, and I quite like the way it rides in ‘soft' mode so that's definitely worth £16 a month. Hmm, £524 a month for a £30,855 car. Can I afford that? Nearly. If I learn to cook and cut down on take-away bhunas.
