Volkswagen Golf R driven

This is the Golf R. It has 267bhp. It has 258lb ft of torque. It has four-wheel drive. And it demands your respect

If you've driven a MkI or MkII Golf GTI, you have a handle on what a Golf GTI should be all about - a sharp, tight, lightweight scalpel of a car that changes direction with no more than a half-thought from the driver. And that means four cylinders all the way, which makes the MkV and MkVI Golf GTIs so brilliant. A six-cylinder engine is for bigger cars or for poseurs. And now it's dead. Good.
