Volkswagen Golf R driven
This is the Golf R. It has 267bhp. It has 258lb ft of torque. It has four-wheel drive. And it demands your respect

The R feels fast. And you probably couldn't put this much power and torque into a front-wheel-drive Golf GTI and get away with it. The thing would torque-steer off the road. But with the four-wheel-drive system on the R, you simply rocket out of corners, and that's a fantastic sensation. The system is a version of VW's 4motion, as seen on the Tiguan, tightened up for quicker reaction times. It uses a Haldex clutch, which basically means it pumps torque to the rear wheels when the grip is needed. It's an excellent system, and this latest generation of Haldex really gets the torque hitting the rear wheels quickly. There is no discernible delay.
