Volkswagen Golf R driven
This is the Golf R. It has 267bhp. It has 258lb ft of torque. It has four-wheel drive. And it demands your respect

A hint to the R's nature was given to its driver early in proceedings, when I turned off the stability control. Or tried to. The bright yellow ‘DSC off' light blinked at me in an annoying fashion, and kept blinking. Is that off? Maybe not. Hold button in for longer. Nope, it just turns the system on again if you hold it - there's no BMW-esque hidden ‘off' mode. So, with that annoying flashing yellow light driving me slightly bananas, I got the impression that this is a car VW would prefer you to drive with the stability on, confirmed when we found a snow-covered, deserted airfield in Lincolnshire and discovered that the stability control doesn't actually turn off at all, even when it says it's off. It will always bring the car back into line when it detects too much yaw angle.
