Subaru Imprezza 11/20

‘There’s no better way to pledge your allegience to the bobble-hatted hordes who like standing all day in wet forests. The great thing is, you can actually feel that this car is rally bred.’

Our verdict

The Subaru Impreza continues to be blessed with fine handling and sweet engines, though only the WRX feels fast. Subaru’s designers continue to baffle us with their idea of a good-looking car though.

Comfort

Subaru has long proved that good handling doesn't have to mean a poor ride, and the new generation's more sophisticated suspension moves the game on again. The flat-four engines hum quietly away at a cruise.

Performance

The non-turbo engines feel strangled somehow. If at all possible get the WRX, which has loads of useful torque.

Cool

Despite the gawky looks, a metallic blue WRX sends the right messages, especially if you get the wheels painted gold.

Quality

Like all Subarus, long-term reliability and quality is superb, but you might not notice on your first contact with the plasticky dashboard.

Handling

Turning eagerly into a bend and getting its power down out of it, the Impreza shows Subaru's motorsport expertise. It isn't upset by bumps or slippery surfaces, and sends up lots of feel to the driver.

Practicality

The non-turbo manual versions come with a dual-range transmission which is handy for pulling trailers. There's also stacks of equipment.

Running costs

The Impreza is petrol-only at the moment so be prepared for that. Otherwise, cheap insurance - except WRX - and well-regarded dealers and low maintenance costs make owners happy. And there's always a ready used market in the countryside.

TG Tips

The 2.0RX has HDD big-screen satnav as standard. It’s one of the cheapest cars that does.
