I've driven the Transfagarasan Highway on my most recent trip to Europe. It's a good road, maybe even a great road. But under no circumstances is it the best road in the world. I've driven better. Much better. The Transfagarasan is just 56 miles long and a mere 6500 feet at its highest point. By contrast, the Beartooth highway stretches a distance of 70 miles and reaches nearly 11,000 feet above sea level. At one point, the road itself rises nearly 3000 vertical feet over the course of 12 miles. Furthermore the Beartooth highway has not one, but three stretches of switchbacks and hairpins more exciting than those of the Transfagarasan; turns crazy enough to get the blood pumping to the important bits. Best of all, you are highly unlikely to meet any law enforcement whatsoever. Most counties in this part of the world only have a sheriff and a deputy to police a land area about half the size of Northern Ireland. This is done without the benefit of cc-tv or average speed cameras. Trust me, you really have to experience this. 44°58.1?N 109°27.9?W
