Guys electric cars were produced in 1996 GM EVI, RAV 4 and other manafacturers, people loved them, they were all crushed in USA they had a great rang 200 miles the batterry technology was purchased by an oil company I can't understsnd why there were a lot of vested interests that saw to it they didn't get a foothold even good old George W bush had his hand in it, Texan derr oil??? Watch who killed the electric car to see how god they were and how they were got rid off.Jeremy you failed to mention Solar power could go back into the power grid to offset the pollution. The battery problem could easily be designed out by driving into a special station that lowers the batteries rotates and puts freshly charged batteries in place or you could have a true hybrid that the elec motor drives the wheels supported by a diesel for long distances or to get to that station I mentioned. I am a petrol head myself however who killed the electric car woke me up. Just Imagine an Electric Future.

I want to report this comment for:

It's not electricity that makes it go. It's tax money. California props it up because it's completely unable to compete with the cost of operation of a petrol car. So taxpayers like me are helping Brad Clooney and their like put up their solar panels and buy their electric cars. Not that there IS any tax money for such things. The cost will come down when we are all required by law to own them. That's next. I'm keeping my TR3 just in case of such emergencies, assuming it will keep running on bioethanol.

Trouble is some people probably don't realise Top Gear is more entertainment than factual. Those not in the UK don't understand our humour (dare I say Mexico). TopGear should test it again and actually put it around the track with the Stig for the next series.

It seemed the way you videoed the Tesla that it actully ran out of fuel. Yes we get the homour aspect of the show but be fair. The Tesla isn't running out of fuel unless you sit in one spot and do dounuts. Look at other fast homebuilt vehicles like White Zombie or Killacycle. Very dependable and fast. This is partly where the Tesla came from. With a bit of British style you have a very sporty & compared to lets say a Porshe a bargain in performance. BTW not EVen the most nutty Porsche driver is going to drive nard all the time. There just isn't the space for it.

29AV8, you're not too bright it seems. The government subsidizes the processing of petroleum, so our tax dollars are being spent for gasoline powered cars. And the tax dollars being spent on gasoline is FAR more than what is being spent on any green energy. Not only that, but did you forget how American car companies were bailed out using OUR money when they all went bankrupt? Guess ya forgot that huh? American car manufacturers have been subsidized by the government because they can NOT compete with foreign car manufacturers. But I completely support subsidizing producers of electric powered cars to bring down the market price and make them more affordable and competitive in the market place.

After all, how else will this technology get off the ground? Initial costs are ALWAYS higher, but American car makers have no excuse because they had decades to get their cars right, and they still can't compete. Take away all subsidies for gasoline and gasoline cars, and give them to electric car makers.
