After all, how else will this technology get off the ground? Initial costs are ALWAYS higher, but American car makers have no excuse because they had decades to get their cars right, and they still can't compete. Take away all subsidies for gasoline and gasoline cars, and give them to electric car makers.

BBC TopGear is by far the best one to watch, the American version tries, but theres too many legal tie downs over here that kill the entertaiment value. I do like the Tesla alot, but if BMW and Audi can take a a little verbal drumming from Jeremy and company, then Tesla should improve continue to improve on their vehicles instead of crying to their lawyers. Sorry we sue everyone, we just dont know any better. -y

The problem with this "test" is that they had already made up what they were going to say about the car before they even received it. The car didn't actually run out of power in their tests. The cars computer proves that, and you can find that information elsewhere online. Also, when talking about recharging they say it takes 16 hours to charge using a 13amp outlet. What you get when you buy the Tesla is a 70amp hookup in your garage, and there are a lot of these connections all over the UK and other countries. Recharging the Tesla Roadster on a 70amp outlet takes only 3-4 hours. Jeremy didn't say anything about this. Also, they didn't make any point in explaining that running out of power wouldn't likely happen as you CAN go about 200 miles (320km) on a single charge. This is shown by thousands of owners who have proven it themselves. I really like this show; I just feel they didn't do a very good job of "testing" the Tesla Roadster.

I hope the programme didn't deliberately mislead the public. That wouldn't really be helpful. I tend to believe that there was a deliberate attempt to create great television by "dropping the bombshell" having initially raved about the car. The reason I believe this is because the programme makers deliberately avoided saying anything about the most likely charging option (one that would take 3-4 hours) and that is well known to anyone who has spent only a little time looking into electric cars. More taxpayers money wasted I suspect! PS Jeremy Clarkson is just the presenter - don't shoot the messenger - even if he clearly enjoys the script! - it is good entertainment after all....its the people behind the camera that put the show on air.

I don't know why but when I saw this episode made me remember when HP laughed at Wozniak when he had to present the Apple I, for how knows about history.

The fact that there is a lot of skeptisism to electrical cars is not hard to understand from a historical point of view. There has always been resistance to new things through out history. People tried to outrace trains with their superfast horses. Even Graham Bell never owned a phone, for instance.
