I Believe that the reason why it didn't make 500 horse is that it loses some to the exhaust system and environmental laws being so strict in England. I very much agree with Hamond, on buying a 60s Mustang, because in America if a car was built before smog control laws of ' 72, you can literally run it with straight pipes

A true America Muscle Car fan would not hold the breaks down sling (a--) end around the track .This car is a high performancs car and needs a skill driver and Mr Shelby would not invested his time or money on a poject that would cut into his profit and make his name look like rubbish..If they put a indenpable supension just like 03,04 cobra it would be more track worthy or add a upgrade pinhard bar to the rear supension it would be more of a track car,you have to know more about the fundamentals before you rule this car out of the game.

Engine HP and rear wheel HP are not the same are they? Why keep taking cheap shots at American cars? It is so transparent every time a hollow shot is taken. Take a deep breath and accept that comparing a little fun toy like the Elise to a practical car with tons of grunt is irrelevant. Just get over it, TG will seem more objective. Does every Livingston-like chap really hate us that much? Put other cars on the Dyno why don't you?

Re: comment from teen U.S.Stig- Compression ratios dropped a little in 1971 from '70 (most commonly with thicker head gaskets) and lot in '72. A longggg time ago California enacted the toughest emission laws in the world. Since so many Euro and British cars (mostly German) were sold here it was long ago realized that it made no sense to keep making different engine setups for different markets. (Carbon tax when driving in certain parts of London?-sad that you are so bent over) Especially since California was home to a very large share of buyers. Most US states don't care about what you do with your car if it is older than 1975 since the numbers are essentially irrelevant today. I am always shocked to hear prices quoted on the show and in the magazine of American cars. No one here is paying $150,000 for a Corvette or the ugly but fast new Mustangs. Please put everything on the dyno and publish the facts.

To be brutally honest Mustangs Make big power.. Here in the USA its very common to run across a mustang pushing above 650 Horsepower at the crankshaft With cheap modifications.. I believe a properly built Mustang can take down just about any car.

Hi all. First of all, I know the people that are all upset are just Mustang fans. As far as the comment about it being emissions control neutered, that car came from the USA, from Ford, and was not modified for the UK. The CLAIMED horsepower is 500, which is why they called it a GT500. They lied, which happens often with car manufacturers. The fact of the matter is they are in competition with other US car makers, and they wanted to sell sell sell (the American way). I have seen many 4 cylinders blow away Mustangs, even 8 second 'Stangs. I love American muscle, but the sad truth is you can put something like a 2.0 liter Evo up against a Mustang of any make, and it will eat it up. The era has ended for the big, gas guzzling 8 cylinder muscle car, and is now in the hands of the light weight 4 banger. Oh, and at 450 horsepower, the Evo is dead even with the Mustang, and can go just as fast.

Ok my problem with this is that the shelby dynoed at 450 at the rear wheels thats what that shows. So actually it has well over 500 hp at the fly because you have to take in account for the loss of power through the drivetrain. And richards car has well over has about 325 at the fly still. You should have known that Richard. Im also insulted that you wrote almost on the car you thats just wrong.
