UK Gov’t Considering Speed Limiters

uk-govt-considering-road-specific-speed-limiters

According to UK government transport advisers, road-specific speed limiting technology could cut down on road accidents with injuries by 29% and lower emissions. Unfortunately, as is too often the case with things that mean to cut emissions and improve safety, this device would take much control away from the driver.

Proposed by the both the ambitiously-named Commission for Integrated Transport and the Motorists' Forum, the device would limit a car's velocity by checking its location via satellite and adjusting speed based on the road's prescribed limit. This would happen by a combination of power-reduction and remote brake application... yeah, we cringed a bit when we read that, too. Traction control and ABS is just about as automated as we'll take our brakes, thank you.

Jon Lewis of the Motorists Forum sees the limiters helping motorists, but allows that it "...should be a voluntary system, that the drivers decide if they have fitted to their car or not, and that they decide if they want to over-ride the speed limit - that should be their choice." If that ends up being the case we even further question its usefulness. We also can't see it being even slightly considered in our great nation, where driving the speed limit will have you run off the New Jersey Turnpike faster than you can say "fahgettaboudit."

Now that I know that…how can you tell what the speedlimiter on your car is?

What a lame idea. Civilized world, indeed… no one would go for that here. Although I’ve heard Oregon is flipping around the idea of mileage-based road taxes… which would blow, since Oregon is currently a very cheap state to register a car in.

The unlimited German autobahns are the safest freeways in the world despite the speed.  The Germans have lane discipline drilled into them in driver’s ed, something no American driver has.

And call me a libertarian cynic, but government controlled cars are an “accident” waiting to happen.

First it’s voluntary.  Then after massaging a study to produce the right results, the Government would make it mandatory.  Then they’ll move on to govern another part of your life you’d rather them not bother with.

I would like to point out that people can be killed in car accidents at almost any speed.  This attempt to control the population (it’s a control thing) overlooks the issue that a lack of power is a lack of control and that can kill as well.  If the car can’t get you out of a jam, You’re dead.  I understand they are targeting the speeders but they are putting the rest us in danger.

My dog has a chip in her back so that we can monitor her speed limits. She has soft fur.

I agree with beerboyone.. I think that would be better and cheaper in some way cause its easier to make..and about the article, that would take away all the fun of driving cause you dont have control of the car basically.. its just staying in the speed limit just like everybody else so it wouldnt bother what car u have or drive because everyone would be goin the same speed =[

How about they stop wasting time on those studies and start making cars that can drive themselves. Then they won’t have to worry about “speeding”... pshh

Absolutely rediculous. I drive about 50k per year and I can think of more instances than I care to remember where flooring my vtec powerplant was the only action that could have saved me from much more than a fender bender.

And I can not believe that the citizens of the UK would allow their government to know their whereabouts at all times. Eh, Comrads?

I second that.

I can’t see an active system being used but maybe a passive system that constanly beeps if you are exceeding the roads speed limit.
