This, ladies and gents, is the new Peugeot 3008. And doesn’t it look interesting? Even if you’re not an admirer of its bold looks, the change from the blobby old 3008 to this adventurously styled crossover is one to celebrate.
There are creases galore, a bold two-tone colour scheme and a very high ‘waistline’ that really exaggerates the 3008’s height. Like it or not, you won’t miss one on the road.
It’s meant to be a proper SUV this time around, too, with a hill-descent system, as well as snow, mud and sand modes for the traction control. You can also have all-terrain tyres. The new 3008 is also 100kg lighter than the car it replaces, Peugeot promising “an exhilarating driving experience”. We’re not sure about that, but the 308 drives pretty well, and the 3008 is spun from the same platform.
We’ve already seen its i-Cockpit, but it’s worth reiterating its highlights. Peugeot is sticking steadfastly with its weeny-steering-wheel-beneath-the-dials setup, but trust us, you get used to it quickly when you’re driving one.
And what dials they are. If you can even call them that: they’re displayed on a 12.3-inch digital display with multitudinous personalisation options. It’s complemented by an 8-inch touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard (a 3D sat nav among its functions), which hoovers up most of the switches, ensuring it’s all pretty minimalist inside. Buy an automatic, and you also get a wilfully odd gear selector.
There’s heaps more room inside than before, including an extra 36mm of headroom. Excellent news for top hat fans. And if you’re a top hat fan who also enjoys skiing, you’ll be delighted to know the front passenger seat can fold to allow your skis to slide in with ease. Because crossover.
The 3008 will debut at September’s Paris motor show, and arrives in the UK in early 2017. There’ll be a plethora of petrol and diesel engines on offer, ranging from 99bhp to 178bhp, with CO2 emissions as low as 100g/km.
