New TG mag: Sinners vs saints, as petrols takes on electric

Double-cover special: Ferrari 488 Pista, BMW M8, Porsche Mission E, Rimac and more

A line has been drawn. It’s petrol vs electric. Time to pick a side. In this month’s special double-cover edition of Top Gear magazine, we celebrate both the saints and sinners of our automotive future.

Manufacturers have never been at such a position of uncertainty, simultaneously trying to push an EV future while still catering for a petrolhead client base. This complex and challenging market is bringing out the best in their creativity, which is good for us… and in the April issue we have some incredible machines that will leave those of you sat in the middle of this debate even more confused.

Kicking off things with our sinner’s line-up, we have the Ferrari 488 Pista, the follow-up to the (very hard to follow up) Ferrari 458 Speciale. Lightweight, stunning looks, outrageous performance – if there is a reason to ensure petrol cars live on, this is it.

Alongside this we have the BMW Concept M8 Gran Coupe, a performance version of BMW’s new 8-Series, and one that will stir your emotions. Our sinners conclude with the Mercedes-AMG GT 4dr Coupe, claiming a staggering 0–62mph in 3.2secs and 196mph, despite weighing more than two tonnes.

But don’t pick a side just yet… For those of you who consider yourself a touch more saintly, we have the Porsche Mission E Cross Turismo, Jaguar I-Pace and Rimac C_Two. These three EV cars are at the very forefront of automotive technology and future design. With stunning looks and mind-blowing performance, will these be the cars of tomorrow, or will the petrol-powered sinners fight off the (electric) charge?

Also this month, we find out how the other half live by taking a Rolls-Royce Phantom VIII to the Alps to play billionaire oligarch. This month’s group test is a crossover special, with the DS7 Crossback, BMW X1, Jaguar E-Pace and Volvo XC40 all going head-to-head.

Our First Drives this month include the Ferrari Portofino, Ford F-150 Raptor, brand new Mercedes-Benz CLS, updated Citroen C4 Cactus, Mercedes S-Class vs Audi A8, VW Polo vs Ford Fiesta, and the Kia Stinger 2.0.

In the news we take a first look at Aston Martin’s luxury Lagonda and wild Valkyrie AMR Pro, the latest Porsche 911 GT3 RS and the two-door Range Rover SV Coupe, which costs a staggering £240,000. Eddie Jordan also brings us his annual F1 preview. There’s also the usual thoughts from TGTV’s Chris and Rory, with guest columnist, Formula E presenter Nicki Shields.
