Hennessey has made the world’s fastest Demon
Texan tuner has taken Dodge’s nutjob drag car and turned it up to eleven
You may remember the Dodge Demon. SRT’s unhinged, drag-racing ultra-muscle-car that spanks the bonkers 707bhp Dodge Hellcat into second-class citizenship of Muscle Car world. How? Well, it’s all thanks to 840bhp, 770lb ft of torque and some of the craziest drag tech ever put on a production car. And did we mention that it’ll do wheelies?
For some, that’s not enough madness. People like John Hennessey, who has applied his ‘we make fast cars faster’ mantra by coughing some magic over the Demon’s 6.2-litre HEMI V8. Dom Toretto would be impressed.
The most notable modification to the highest horsepower V8 engine ever produced is the fitment of a 4.5-litre supercharger, replacing the stock 2.7-litre system… which was already bigger than a Hellcat’s. Strapped to a dyno, Hennessey squeezed out 880 horsepower and 806lb ft of torque to the wheels, translating as 1,056 horsepower and 967lb ft of torque at the crank, after factoring in Hennessey’s estimated 20 per cent drivetrain loss.
The upgrade also includes stainless steel long tube headers, a beefier pulley, high-flow air induction system, upgraded throttle body, upgraded fuel pump and fuel injectors. And Hennessey’s bespoke ECU map. All of which comes with a one year/12,000-mile limited warranty so you can pull wheelies all night down the strip without having to worry.
With a set of sticky drag tyres (nice and toasty thanks to a mahoosive, supercharger screaming burnout), Hennessey pointed the car at the horizon, let rip when the lights went out and ran the quarter-mile in 9.14 seconds at 152.59 mph. That’s 0.17 seconds and six mph faster than a stock Demon. Which, we’d like to add, is faster to 60mph than a Bugatti Chiron (2.4secs) and the Tesla P100D with Ludicrous Plus (2.3 and a little bit). And that’s with the Demon being rear-wheel drive only compared with those two cars’ all-wheel drive platforms.
