Overall verdict
Has moved on from its predecessor and is now one of the best luxury SUVs on sale.

For:

Luxurious, now more efficient and precise

Against:

The styling. It’s one step away from being a Chinese copy of itself

Overview

What is it?

The facelifted, re-christened Mercedes ML. The GL lettering is now tagged onto all of Merc’s crossover/4x4-type cars, as per the classic G-Wagen, with GLA being the smallest, then the GLC, and so on. Basically, this is Merc’s BMW X5 rival. But wait: there’s never been a Benz X6 rival…until now. Yup, on the same underpinnings you can now also have a lower, wider GLE Coupe. It’s got five doors, so it certainly isn’t a coupe, but that never did the CLS (or the X6) any harm, did it?
