Jaguar XE review: At ease, the baby Jag is a good ‘un. Good job, because there’s a lot riding on it...

Good stuff

Top-drawer drive, impressive new diesel, plenty for 3-Series buyers to like

Bad stuff

The styling’s nice enough, but is it bold enough?

Overview

What is it?

It’s a compact sports saloon, pretty much the heartland car for anyone who has a decent regular job, a couple of kids and a smattering of Coldplay and Adele albums. Only this particular example is wearing a Jaguar badge, which makes the XE officially a big deal. Not least for Jaguar, whose last stab, the X-Type, was a faux-premium reheated Ford Mondeo. Jaguar could do with this one being a big fat hit, and consequently has thrown everything it knows (and a few billion pounds) into the mix.

What's the verdict?

The long-awaited baby Jag doesn’t disappoint. It needed to be right. It is. Now it has to deliver sales.
