‘A bit bug-eyed and they seem to be made exclusively in silver, but not an actively bad car.’
Our verdict
Merc’s large saloon is everything you expect; well-appointed, quality feeling and with decent if not earth-shattering RWD dynamics. The estate has been the family bus of the posh for decades.
Comfort
The big E delivers on a comfy long-distance proposition thanks to a long-legged ride quality. You get more adjustability with the ‘Airmatic' air suspension, but if you're not that bothered about going terribly quickly then you're better off without.
Performance
The E-class seems to get every engine that Mercedes produces, so there's huge choice to be had. The range goes from a 1.8-litre supercharged four-pot to the asylum-bound E63 AMG with 507bhp, 0-62 in 4.5 seconds and 155mph top end. The E240 V6 is pretty rational though; 177bhp, 177lb ft, 2597cc V6 means 0-62mph in just over nine and 142mph top end. For the dieselly among you or those bound for private hire, go for the 170bhp E220 CDi.
Cool
Cabbies in Munich love 'em. Normal people less so, unless it's an E63 Estate with two dead dogs in the back.
Quality
Superlative. The E-class is what Mercedes Benz is all about, and it feels like it'll last. Good materials, good quality fit and finish.
Handling
The range is so big that you can specify anything from classic Mercedes waft through to hardcore spine assault with the 63 AMG. Basically, the E-class tends towards the slightly lardy and inert - just like the buyers want them. Body control is good (better with optional Airmatic), steering is good - very few chinks in the overall armour.
Practicality
The estate is square and humongous with 1950litres of space available. Mind you, the saloon has a 540-litre boot with the seats up, so that's not too bad. Space inside is remarkably good - you'll have no problem taking five with luggage.
Running costs
Expensive servicing and engines that aren't exactly the last word in cleanliness mean that the E-class isn't pence to run. You'll get mid-thirties mpg from the smaller engines, single figures with the E63 AMG. Not a cheap car to run, but probably worth it for the diamond-hard residuals. There's always a market for Es.
TG Tips
E63 Estate with E220 CDi badges, hidden exhausts and banded steel wheels. Go on, do it.
