Volkswagen is working on a GTI/GTX hot hatch version of the ID.2all

VW’s Technical Development chief tells TG that a sporty version of the small electric hatch is in the works

Published: 16 Mar 2023

Volkswagen whipped the covers off its new ID.2all concept yesterday, with the Polo-sized hatch previewing a production car that will start at less than £22,000 and will arrive at some point in 2025. All very exciting of course, but as soon as we saw those chunky rear arches, all we could think about is whether there would be a proper hot hatch version.

And on that note, we have good news. “We’re working on a sporty version,” VW’s Board Member for Technical Development Kai Grünitz tells TG. “It will only be front-wheel drive. No all-wheel drive.”

Sounds like it’s definitely on the cards, though what’s not been decided yet is the name. “Whether it will be a GTI or GTX or whatever we will see,” says Grünitz.

VW is also being pretty tight lipped on performance figures for the future hot hatch, but given that the standard ID.2all claims 223bhp and a 0-62mph time of 6.9 seconds – meaning it’s more powerful and quicker to accelerate than a Mk5 Golf GTI – it’s safe to assume that an ID.2 GTI/GTX would be a rather rapid little thing.

“I’ve got a number in mind for the power figure,” says Grünitz. “But this will be a surprise for the next time we see each other.”

So, it turns out the relatively affordable hot hatch may not die out in this era of electrification after all. Good news indeed.
