The Lucid Air Sapphire has just been turned into the fastest bulletproof car in the world

The 1,234bhp super saloon gains a transparent suit of armour, ballistic windows and… unlimited Wi-Fi access

Published: 28 Aug 2024

The Lucid Air Sapphire: 1,234bhp, 1,430lb ft of torque and a sub-two-second 60mph sprint. In case numbers aren’t your forte, all that lot basically means it’s… really, really fast. And now you can coat your fast with a layer of bulletproofing, because how could that not be the first thing which springs to mind for an upgrade?

The service is provided by the U.S. Armor Group, which knows a thing or two about shoring up defences. Here, the tri-motor Sapphire’s body has been given lightweight transparent ‘armour’ and ballistic windows, enabling it to bat away a .44 magnum round from any part of its exterior, since it's a full 360-degree kit.

This armour is claimed to be up to 10 times stronger than regular steel while being five times lighter, which means performance shouldn’t take too big a... hit.

As a result, the 207mph top speed and quite brilliant handling dynamics should remain close to stock. We don’t expect the 427-mile range to waver too much either, since the batteries already haul around a car that weighs as much as Mount Fuji, so what’s an extra 175kg?

Bulletproofing aside, the Armor Group can also install an array of 007-like gadgets, including electric-shock door handles, pepper spray dispensers and poison gas detection and subsequent protection.

The tech has also seen an overhaul, which includes ‘enhanced’ cybersecurity, a Wi-Fi system that apparently doesn’t disconnect and a radar unit which constantly scans for nearby threats using multiple data sources - including local police departments. This thing is turning into the road-going version of Air Force One.

But while The President’s airborne home costs hundreds of millions of dollars, the U.S. Armor Group’s Lucid Air Sapphire costs a smidge under £360,000. How’s that for a bargain?
