Gallery: behind the scenes in Africa

  1. Presumably, you all tuned into part one of our African epic, which involved Hammond, May and Clarkson trying to find the source of the Nile in £1500 estate cars they bought off the internet.

And our triumvirate of bangers - a BMW 5-Series, Subaru Impreza WRX wagon, and a Volvo 850 T5-R - made good truck of demonstrating that exploration’s actually quite hard. Especially when pebble-smooth tarmac gives way to oceans of mud. Even more especially when said cars, which aren’t really up to the job as standard, have been modded so the presenters can sleep in them….

But they’ve also proved that it is just - just - possible. So far… Check out our exclusive gallery to remind yourself of the trials and tribulations they faced. And don’t forget to tune in to BBC Two or BBC HD on Sunday, 8:00pm for part two.

  2. Ugandan traffic. Jammy.

  3. Clarkson eschews traditional Brit explorer garb for double denim.

  4. Clarkson and May’s thoughtful gift to Hammond provided an elevated lounge area for his Subaroom Dineza.

  5. London’s Westway flyover really blossoms in springtime.

  6. BBC groundsmen regret selling off the lawnmower to fund their Christmas party.

  7. Jeremy exalts the virtues of poweeerrr. Then gets stuck. A lot.

  8. It’s like looking into an alternate universe - Jeremy speaks sense, James buys something fast and stupid and Richard carefully considers what he’s about to say.

  9. Hands on hips if you’ve bought the best car…

  10. Stylish, sophisticated, even beautiful - Richard’s Impreza is literally none of these things.

  11. Jeremy and a machine that stabs needles into things at high speeds. Never a good combination.

  12. This street vendor’s weight-lifting ability is literally bananas.

  13. Despite being over 6,000 miles away from London, Richard’s Scooby could still pick up Rinse FM.

  14. This bulletblown African airport looked really quite appealing next to the back-up Ford Scorpio estate…

  15. “How hard can it be?”

  16. Jeremy and Richard spot May using the BMW’s toilet facilities.
