When the 2015 models of the Dodge Challenger were unveiled at last month’s New York Auto Show, there was one thing missing - the new SRT model.

But now specs of the new range-topping muscle car have been revealed and it looks very much like we could be witnessing the birth of the new most-powerful production muscle car ever made.

Current holder of that record is the Ford Shelby GT500, which has a 5.8-litre supercharged V8 putting out a scarcely believable - until you drive it - 662bhp and 631lbft.

Exact power outputs for the SRT’s supercharged V8 6.2-litre engine, nicknamed Hellcat, have not yet been revealed. But the company has released the fact that it will be over 600bhp.

Insiders suggest that not only will it will top the V10 SRT Viper’s 640bhp, but blow away the GT500’s output figures too.

Taking a leaf out of the Ford Boss 302 Mustang playbook, the SRT Challenger will come with two keys - a black key for everyday driving and a red key for unlocking the full potential of the raging V8.

And to give you a chance of getting at least some of the power to the road, there is a new limited slip diff, super-wide P Zero tyres and a host of electronics.

Other fun details include Chrysler’s first ever active exhaust system, vast brakes, and the Air Catcher air intake, which replaces the driver’s side parking headlight with a huge hole to force feed the engine with air.

All that’s missing now is the final power output figure - and a Vanishing Point special edition. Standby for more on both soon.
