  • An electric vehicle being driven

The year 2030 promises to be a huge turning point for motoring in this country. This, as you probably well know, is when the ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars comes into effect. And if you’re keen to get ahead, or simply want to go greener before then, you’ve probably been thinking about investing in an EV – if you haven’t done so already.

The good news is, there are lots of benefits to owning an EV. For a start, you’ll no longer pay through the nose for petrol or car tax (until 2025), plus you’ll enjoy regional congestion levy exemption (for now), along with a lower personal carbon footprint.

What’s more, OVO is doing what it can to make it as easy as possible for you to switch. From smart charger installations to free add-ons, the energy provider is gunning to become the one-stop shop for EV ownership.

  • An electric vehicle being charged

With the battery ranges of new EVs increasing all the time, so does the capacity for longer, more efficient journeys. With that being the case, efficient home charging has a big role to play. It’s estimated that by December 2027, there will be 5.2m EVs on our roads – a 261% increase on the current number – and that will come with an urgent need to increase this country’s public and private charging capacity.

When it comes to home charging, OVO is here to help. Whether you’re an existing customer or are looking for a reason to switch, OVO offers expert installation from a choice of some of the smartest EV chargers around.

You can choose from tethered, which will give you the convenience of an in-built cable, or untethered, for a less bulky solution. With solar panel compatibility available on selected chargers and sleek designs across the board, the energy provider couldn’t be making it any easier for you to start your EV journey.

  • Someone working out their finances on a calculator

As you keep an eye on your energy bills, OVO is keeping drivers front of mind. If you switch to one of OVO’s Home Energy tariffs, you have the option to select the Charge Anytime add-on. This allows you to charge your EV for 7p per kWh whenever you want, either by having a compatible smart charger installed by one of OVO’s engineers, or with any charger if your EV is already compatible. You can check yours here

And if that prospect has you reaching for your calculator, you can hold fire – that works out at under 3p a mile, which is 75% less than the price of petrol*. This add-on is a huge win if you’re a busy EV owner who doesn’t want to plan your life around energy price peaks and troughs, when it’s cheaper to have your car on charge.

There’s no doubt we’re in the middle of an EV revolution, with more and more drivers making the switch. OVO is supporting in any way it can with solutions that are changing the game, so the question is, are you playing?

This saving claim has been calculated by comparing the 'Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD: 145 – 305 miles' doing the UK average of 7,000 miles with Charge Anytime with a smart charging rate of 7p per kWh versus the 'BMW 3 Series with a 820 Mile Range and 13 Gallon Tank' doing 7,000 miles using petrol where the price per litre is £1.48. The 'Tesla Model 3 Standard Range RWD: 145 – 305 miles' equates to 2.56p per mile. Whilst the 'BMW 3 Series 820 Mile Range, 13 Gallon Tank' equates to 10.70 per mile. Resulting in a 78.5% difference.
